What's Up with Digital Learning

Lots of Digital Learning is happening around the county. Thanks to those who shared photographs and videos of what you are doing. Let's continue to share so we can inspire others.

Enka Middle School

During Jet Fuel, Enka Middle's remediation and enrichment block, Joseph Lilly's students are studying digital cell phone photography. Here is a link to some ideas on how to use cell phone photography in the classroom.

Enka High School

Several lessons are going on in the media center over the last few weeks that blend tech with instruction...

  • Students in Mr. Frady's U.S. History class used the Explain Everything app on the Media Center iPads to create songs about the Bill of Rights. Students worked in small groups to create lyrics or raps that communicated their understanding and the importance of key amendments, and then the students presented them to the class. Here is an example.

  • Mrs. Ro's ESL class used the web tool Voki to create avatars and then recorded themselves reading a summary they had written for The House on Mango Street. The students practiced their speaking skills while creating a greater understanding of their class reading.
  • A small group of students in Mrs. Stanley-Marino's English IV Honors class created a Beowulf short using Final Cut Pro. Students demonstrated their understanding of the final scene of the epic poem by writing an original script and creating a short movie.
These are only a few of the great things going on with technology and instruction at Enka High School!

North Buncombe Middle School

At NBMS, we used Aurasma for Media Center student orientation. It was an interactive spin on a traditional orientation. The kids really enjoyed it! We'll be highlighting a new app with the classes each month during checkout with our new iPads!

Erwin High School

  • We are using our smart lunch hour for programs and activities (we do #ArtFriday, Reading Days, Movie Days, Gaming Club, Book Club...) and serve an average of 90-100 students, depending on the day and activity
  • We have a new 3d printer and are working on ways to incorporate into computer science and drafting classes. Right now students can bring in useful things they want to print. Here's a great link for 3D Printing.
  • Banned Books Week and Teen Read Week celebrations will include book giveaways, movie days, book talks, and more.
  • We now have games like Jenga available for check out by students
